Flight Delay Analysis
Flight Delay is a delay in
which an airline flight takes off and/or lands later than its scheduled time.
The FAA considers a flight to be delayed when it is 15 minutes later than its
scheduled time. As we know that, flight delay will bring lots of cost to both
airlines and customers. As here, we will see which carriers perform the best
and the worst in terms of airline delay, how is the arrival time delay related
to the depart time delay, and how is the geographical pattern of the delay
time. We can have a general idea and see the whole picture of the flight delay
from this analysis.
From the first graph in the
upper right corner, we can see that the average delay arrival time for all the
carriers. The average arrival delay time is 9.5 minutes late. Since 15 minutes
is the boundary between whether it is considered delay or not. Only MQ Carrier
has an overall delay time larger than 15 minutes, which indicates that MQ
perform the worst, and customers usually have to expect arrival delay if they
take MQ airline. WN seems to perform the best, since it has an overall arrival
delay time that is under average, and it has the highest number of flights
among all other carrier.
The second graph on the
upper shows how the arrival delay in different cities is related to the No. of
flights. The larger the circle is, the higher average arrival time it is. We
can see that arrival delay is quite common among all the cities. And there are
few cities that have larger arrival delay than other cities. Also, noticeably, those
cities with larger number of flights do not necessarily have higher average
arrival delay time. On the contrary, those cities that have larger arrival
delay time do not have so many number of flight actually.
The lower left corner bar
chart shows how the arrival delays over day of the week. We can see that Monday
and Sunday perform the worst, while days in the middle of the week perform the
best. Similarly, those days with higher average arrival delay is reversely
related to the number of flights.
The last graph shows
relationship between departure delay and arrival delay. We can see that when
the departure delay time is small, the arrival time has a bigger probability
becoming larger, when the departure delay time become large, the arrival delay
time is just as the depart delay time.
Above all, we can see that
the number of flights is reversely related to the arrival delay. MQ Carrier performs
the worst while WN perform the best. There is not so huge differences in arrival
delay among all the cities. Monday and Sunday perform the worst over the days
of the week. And departure delay closely match with arrival delay.
